What is Laparoscopic Surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery, which is sometimes referred to as minimally invasive surgery, is the performance of surgical procedures with the assistance of a video camera and several thin instruments. During the surgical procedure, small incisions of up to half an inch are made and plastic tubes (called ports) are placed through these incisions. The camera and the instruments are then introduced through the ports, which allow access to the inside of the patient.
The camera transmits an image of the organs inside onto a television monitor. The video camera becomes the surgeon’s eyes; the surgeon uses the image from the video camera positioned inside the patient’s body to perform the procedure. The surgeon cannot see directly into the patient.
Laparoscopic surgery is most commonly performed in cases of gallbladder, appendix and gastric bypass surgery, but it is also used in a variety of other medical procedures, such as hernia surgery, gynecological surgery, kidney surgery and orthopedic surgery.
Laparoscopic surgery technology has become so advanced that many experts are beginning to wonder if the complexity of laparoscopy has outpaced the skills that a surgeon needs to safely perform it. Unless a doctor is properly trained in the latest technologies and techniques, the risk of surgical mistakes can be substantial. When the procedure is not performed properly, the results can be devastating – organ damage, electrode burns to vital organs, blood clots, infection and even death.
