Erb's Palsy Malpractice

What is Erb’s Palsy?

Erb’s palsy, also known as brachial plexus palsy, is a paralysis or weakness of the arm caused by an injury to one or more nerves that control and supply the muscles of the shoulder and upper extremities (upper brachial plexus). It can also be know as

  • Erb-Duchenne Palsy
  • Erb’s Paralysis
  • Erb-Duchenne Paralysis
  • Duchenne-Erb Paralysis
  • Duchenne’s Paralysis
  • Duchenne-Erb Syndrome
  • Upper Brachial Plexus Paralysis, Erb-Duchenne Type
  • Upper Brachial Plexus Palsy, Erb-Duchenne Type

It is most commonly seen in newborns and is often the result of a difficult and/or mishandled delivery. The brachial plexus is a network of nerves that connect around the neck, arm, shoulder, and spine. A serious birth injury can occur if the baby is pulled too hard during labor, ultimately tearing or severing the nerves in the brachial plexus area.

A child with Erb’s palsy will have nerve damage, affecting movement and sensation in the arms, wrists, and hands. Children with brachial plexus palsy, or Erbs palsy, may also experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Limp or paralyzed arms or hands
  • Lack of muscle control in the arms, hands, or wrists
  • Lack of feeling or sensation in the arms or hands
  • Facial paralysis

While some brachial plexus injuries will heal on their own, most brachial plexus injuries are permanent. Although you may not be able to cure your child of Erb’s plasy or another brachial plexus injury, you can provide them with medical treatment, physical therapy, and surgery to improve their condition.
